Karabits and Silvestrov, history of the "Elegy"

silvestrov_bv.jpg

During the last year of his life, Ivan Karabits addressed Hryhory Skovoroda’s work in Latin. The composer wanted to write his own big study on philosophy and esthetics. Sadly, he didn’t have enough time. Some sketches were later found in his archives. They laid foundation to “Elegy” written by V. Silvestrov.

Silvestrov took great care organizing and weaving in Karabits’ musical texts. The score of this work provides a great example of the union between two creative styles. You will not find musical clashes, energetic eruptions or a dynamic motion. The character of this music conveys a feeling of mournful, yet serene sadness.
